when a Venezuelan friend made me my first arepas, they came with an Old World Venezuelan caveat: ONCE YOU GO AREPA, YOU NEVER GO BACK! apparently, the rhyming fad hadn't caught on in Venezuela... but is that for us to judge? the sentiment is fully justified... to me, the AREPA rates up there with the FRENCH BAGUETTE, the EVERYTHING BAGEL, and Indian NAAN. uh-'rey puh generically, arepas are delicious sandwiches of Venezuela and Colombia, made by filling a crispy-soft corn flour (masa) bun, with, well... basically anything you feel like, dammit. cheese, meat, strawberry jam... feel like chopped liver and whipped cream? you can still call it an arepa! note that the word AREPA can refer to either the SANDWICH or the BUN itself. what makes AREPAS so scrumptious is the crispiness of the outer shell. it's a satisfying, chewy, crisp crispiness over a soft, warm cushion of fluff... it drives me wild. . BOLIVAR is a cool coffee shop with good food, fresh juices.... and this Venezuelan specialty, AREPAS. at first i was confused because the name sounded Bolivian. turns out the BOLIVAR is the VENEZUELAN DOLLAR. the rest of the menu is gourmet salads and sandwiches with, idk, it feels like there's Mediterranean /Italian influence--is it Venezuelan? i'm not the best judge--heck, i thought the place was Bolivian. besides the arepas, i know the turkey sandwich was very fresh, with a healthy portion of green salad. . BOLIVAR has all the items a COFFEE SHOP would have, like BAGELS (look very hearty), OATMEAL, PASTRIES, CAKE. also FRESH JUICES, like GUAVA, ORANGE, WATERMELON, PASSION FRUIT. bottled or made fresh. and, oh, COFFEE. light and airy with walls of windows, dark wood and polished concrete floors. there are bar seats along the edge, tables to STUDY or WORK, and FREE WIFI. the space must have been a clothing shop. there's a cool RAISED DISPLAY PLATFORM in the front window where you can take a seat and play "mannequin" for the day... go ahead, i dare you. . for some time, i'd been driving all the way to Beverly Hills for my arepa fix. this place is so close, how'd i miss them? i'll tell you how: 1. no Yelp listing when i previously searched 2. their signage is obscure and hard to read--passed it a hundred times, not knowing what it was. 3. you had to ask for the arepa menu 4. the address isn't even correct. it says 1739 over their door. they come with a garlicky green sauce that makes it extra special. why so lax? Venezuelan CHILL is all i can guess. i had asked about them a couple years ago about expanding their hours and space. they basically told me it's chill, it's solvent--we enjoy life! that's more the South American pace of business, i guess. hey, at least you know it's authentic. a little more focused on new business now, there's a 10% CHECK-IN OFFER i keep forgetting to use. and their arepas are BETTER, CHEAPER and CLOSER than that other place. AREPA MENU - allow 15-20 minutes to make - Caribbean style black beans and white cheese - white albacore with peppers, onions, roma tomatoes - ham with white or Gouda Cheese - mango - avocado - cheese - chicken breast - avocado - mozzarella, bacon and roasted peppers - Caribbean pulled pork - gruyere, chorizo and onions - Caribbean pulled beef what i've tried : - pulled pork - my fave, full of flavor - pulled beef - not a recommend. i pulled out some crazy long hard black veins.. i know, gross. - ham and gouda - pretty goud, but not wow. the ham is deli slices. - ham and white cheese (Panela) - i liked this cheese even better. it's very good. - mozzarella and bacon - who doesn't love bacon and cheese? i'm not talking to you, vegetarians. mmm, bacon. - chicken-avocado - it's chicken salad-ish; good but garlicky on a final note, a SAD BUT TRUE STORY, confirmed by someone in the know... i came here in November and sat outside. they stocked lovely chilled glass water carafes and cups inside, on a self-service shelf, for you to bring to your table. now, two months later, there's a large copper dispenser with lucite cups. it's a cool-looking dispenser, but why the change? the glass carafes started disappearing. all i can say is wtf is wrong with people? and i hardly ever cuss, btw. unless you count "dammit". oh, and "bastard". ah, bastard's a fucken great word, ain't it? and fuck, if you don't like it, you're a damn bastard! dammit. look, idc if your parents made you drink from a dog bowl till you were 39. satisfy your beverageware fetish elsewhere. NO SOUP FOR YOU! NEXT! happy Yelping and here's to tasting life! :)
